What is health?

According to the WHO, health is defined as:

"A state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity."

The WHO’s definition recognises that health is multifaceted. It goes beyond physical symptoms and considers mental and social aspects. Achieving optimal health involves balancing all three dimensions: physical, emotional, and social.

The definition means that we all have:

  1. Physical Health

  2. Emotional Health

  3. Social Health

What does this mean?

Physical Health:

Physical health refers to the condition of our bodies. It encompasses aspects such as fitness, nutrition, and the absence of illness. Maintaining physical health involves regular exercise, proper nutrition, adequate sleep, and avoiding harmful substances.

Emotional Health:

Emotional health relates to our psychological well-being. It involves managing emotions, coping with stress, and maintaining a positive outlook.

Social Health:

Social health focuses on our interactions with others and our sense of connectedness. It encompasses relationships, social support networks, and community involvement.

Therefore, health is not merely the absence of disease; it is a state of well-being that encompasses our bodies, minds, and social connections.
