Sadness is an unpleasant emotion.

What is an emotion?

Emotions are feelings a person has about things. Some emotions help a person feel good and other emotions can make a person feel sad or upset.

What is sadness?

Sadness is where the person is in a low mood and feels hurt, unhappy, let down, alone. There are many reason why a person may feel sad, someone they loved may have died, they may have lost a job, they may have not got the promotion at work that they were expecting.

Feelings of sadness can affect a person's emotional and social health so it is important that if the person is feeling sad that they understand that they could:

  • talk to others (friends, family, professional help) about the issue or problem. This will help the person feel less sad as they are getting the issue off their chest by sharing it with someone.

  • cry as this can let the emotion out and can release a better feeling for the person who is sad.

  • do some exercising as this will help to release endorphins that can help fight the feelings of sadness and help the person feel better.

  • by doing something that may help take the person's mind off being sad for a while. For example, they could go shopping, do some household chores, go to the cinema, meet up with friends.

  • speak to their GP who could check the person's mental health and provide appropriate support to help the person deal with sadness.
