What is self-concept?

The word 'concept' is about ideas that happen in the mind.

The word 'self' is about the person.

Therefore, self-concept is how a person sees themselves, in their own mind. For example, physical characteristics, abilities, values, goals, personal traits.

A person can maintain a positive self-concept by:

  • Being aware of their own strengths, weaknesses, talent and potential so that they understand how they behave and how they think about things.

  • Being honest and true to who they are and what they value so there is no conflict in their minds about making the right choices.

  • Taking responsibility for personal choices and actions so that they can live with the decisions they have made.

  • Taking on new challenges so that they can continue to challenge and learn about themselves.

  • Accepting themselves for who they are and not apologising for have good values and a kind and thoughtful personality.

  • Being aware that a person can self-improve and develop aspects of themselves through different activities and through different people.
