How to foster positive working relationships in the workplace

Updated: Dec 7, 2023

There are a number of things that can be done in the workplace that can develop and foster good working relationships between all stakeholders. Some of these things include:

Following equality employments legislation

Laws in place in the workplace in Northern Ireland, such as the Equal Pay Act (NI) 1970, Sex Discrimination (NI) Order 1976, Race Relations (NI) Order (2003) and Disability Discrimination Act 1995, all assist in keeping working relationships positive between employers and employees as there are expectations and work-based boundaries set out by law to adhere to.

Following and implementing workplace policies

Workplace policies are designed within the business and to suit the needs of and demands of

the business. Examples of policies that exist in most workplaces include:

  • health and safety policies

  • child protection and safeguarding policies

  • acceptable behaviour policies

  • confidentiality policies

  • dress code policies

  • use of mobile phone policies

  • code of conduct

Policies help employers and employees maintain positive relationships because everyone understands what is expected of them and what may happen if they do not adhere to such policies.

Sharing good practice

Encouraging an atmosphere of sharing good practice between employees helps to maintain positive relationships because colleagues can learn from each other on how best to perform various tasks and this can lead to motivation amongst workers and a happier working environment. Also, sharing good practice will involve good communication amongst employees which can strengthen staff morale and lead to a strong sense of teamwork amongst the workers.

Promoting a positive working atmosphere

A positive working environment is clearly evident in the workplace when staff morale is good, there is good communication between employees and motivation is high. It is achieved when workplace policies and the code of conduct are adhered to, when employment legislation is respected and when there is a mutual acceptance of the work that other people in the workplace do so, this is respected when they share their good practice to the rest of the staff.
