Understanding sexual orientation: The impact on a person’s self-confidence

Updated: Dec 7, 2023

Sexual orientation is the term used to describe what gender a person is attracted to. They could be attracted to a person of the opposite sex, they could be attracted to a person of the same sex or they could be attracted to both sexes.

If a person understands their own sexual orientation, it impacts their self-confidence as:

  • It gives the person a clear sense of who they are, which will give them more confidence about their sexuality and who they are.

  • It could sometimes make the person feel confused about telling people about their sexuality and this may cause them stress and anxiety for fear of being misunderstood.

  • It may cause the person to worry that they may be discriminated against because of their sexuality which will make them feel vulnerable and isolated.

  • It may lead to low self-esteem and lack of confidence because of the fear of not being accepted by friends or family and judged by others.

  • It may make the person anxious and fearful of being attacked/called names by others who do not accept them for who they are.
